The History of the Milford Striped Bass Club

The Milford Striped Bass Club has been part of Milford’s fishing community for generations. Founded in the 1960s by a group of local fishermen with a shared passion for striped bass fishing, the club began as a way for area anglers to come together, share their knowledge, compete, and enjoy the waters of Long Island Sound.

Over the decades, the club grew into much more than a fishing club. It became an organization dedicated to fishing, conservation, education, competition, and bringing families and children together through the outdoors.

The Beginning

The Milford Striped Bass Club was established in the 1960s by local fishermen who shared a love of striped bass and saltwater fishing. In its early years, the club focused heavily on fishing together, comparing catches, sharing knowledge, and taking part in fishing competitions.

Members competed in a variety of categories, including striped bass and other species found in the waters around Connecticut. The club also developed a tradition of recognizing its members for outstanding catches and accomplishments.

Fishing wasn't simply a hobby for the club. It was a way to build friendships and bring local fishermen together.

The Milford Trout Derby

One of the most important chapters in the club's history began when club members noticed that Milford's town ponds were not being used by local children for fishing.

The idea was simple: give children an opportunity to experience fishing.

Two local fishermen contributed $50 each to purchase 120 trout to stock a Milford pond. An advertisement was placed in the local newspaper inviting children to participate.

The organizers expected perhaps a few dozen children.

Instead, approximately 300 children showed up.

That overwhelming response became the beginning of what would grow into the Milford Children's Trout Derby, one of the club's longest-running traditions.

What started with a small stocking of trout and an idea to get local kids fishing became an annual community event that has continued for decades.

By 1989, the event was being described as the 20th Annual Trout Fishing Derby, and newspaper coverage from the early 1990s documented the club stocking thousands of trout for the event. In 1991, approximately 2,000 trout were stocked in the Milford ponds before the children's derby.

The derby has always represented something bigger than a fishing contest. It gives children the opportunity to:

• Spend time outdoors

• Learn about fish and the environment

• Enjoy time with family and friends

• Experience the excitement of catching a fish

• Become part of Milford's fishing tradition

The Children's Trout Derby remains one of the club's most recognizable contributions to the Milford community.

Fishing Education

The club has also played a role in teaching people how to fish.

Historical newspaper coverage from 1990 documented the club working with the Milford Recreation Department and state fisheries educators to provide fishing instruction for Milford and non-Milford children and families.

The classes covered the fundamentals of both freshwater and saltwater recreational fishing, giving young people an opportunity to learn about fishing and actually get out on the water.

The program was offered at no cost, including fishing materials and gear.

At the conclusion of the course, participants were able to take part in the annual Children's Trout Derby.

This combination of education and hands-on experience reflected an important part of the club's philosophy: introducing the next generation to fishing rather than simply telling them about it.

Fishing Competitions and Tournaments

Competition has always been an important part of the Milford Striped Bass Club.

Throughout its history, members have competed in fishing contests targeting a variety of species. Historical records document club members earning recognition for catches of striped bass, bluefish, blackfish and fluke, among others.

The club has held and participated in fishing competitions where members competed for the largest fish, combined catches, and other accomplishments.

These competitions created friendly rivalries while encouraging members to improve their fishing skills and spend more time on the water.

The club has also participated in fishing events and tournaments outside of its own regular competitions, representing Milford and the local fishing community.

Recognition and Club Traditions

Over the years, the club developed traditions for recognizing exceptional catches and contributions by its members.

Historical records show the club establishing annual awards and memorial trophies recognizing outstanding striped bass catches.

These traditions helped preserve the competitive spirit of the organization while creating a record of the anglers and catches that became part of the club's history.

A Club Involved in the Community

Although fishing has always been at the heart of the Milford Striped Bass Club, the organization has consistently been connected to the larger Milford community.

The club has organized events for children, offered fishing education, participated in community activities, and brought families together through outdoor recreation.

The Children's Trout Derby became particularly important because it opened the club's activities to children and families who might not otherwise have had an opportunity to participate in organized fishing.

For generations of Milford children, the derby provided a chance to hold a fishing rod, catch a trout, and discover the enjoyment of being outdoors.

A Tradition That Continued

By the late 1980s and early 1990s, newspaper coverage showed the Milford Striped Bass Club as an established and active organization with regular meetings, fishing competitions, educational programs, awards, and its annual Children's Trout Derby.

The club continued to grow while maintaining the traditions established by its original members.

Decades later, the same basic principles remain:

From a group of local fishermen who simply wanted to share their passion for striped bass, the Milford Striped Bass Club grew into an organization with a much larger legacy.

Its history can be seen not only in the fish that have been caught, the tournaments that have been held, and the awards that have been won, but in the generations of children who have been introduced to fishing through the club.
